Chapter 2: The Name Nobody Said Out Loud
The room went completely silent.
Greg didn't raise his voice.
He didn't need to.
"I want to say something about my daughter."
He looked down at June.
Then slowly across the room.
"My daughter June was removed from the children's table today.
She was told she didn't belong there.
She was told Amber and Mason were my real children."
Nobody moved.
"She is seven years old.
She spent part of her father's birthday sitting alone in a storage room wondering if she was real."
Janet's chin lifted.
"Gregory, this is not the time—"
"It is exactly the time."
A few guests exchanged glances.
Greg's brother had gone still near the grill doorway.
Then Amber's voice cut across the room.
"Grandma did it at Thanksgiving too."
Every head turned.
Amber was standing near the hallway.
Her arms were crossed.
Her jaw was set.
"She moved June's place card.
I watched her do it.
I didn't say anything and I should have."
Janet's face went pale.
"Amber—"
"She's my sister." Amber's voice didn't waver.
"She's always been my sister."
June made a small sound beside me.
That was when Richard, Greg's father, set down his drink and looked at his wife.
The expression on his face was not one I had ever seen before.
"Janet," he said quietly.
"What did you do?"
