The silence on Julian's end lasted four full seconds.
"That's not possible," he said finally.
His voice had lost its polish.
"And yet." Elena shifted the infant gently against her chest.
"Here we are."
"You're lying." The cathedral bells had started.
She could hear them clearly now — deep, ceremonial, indifferent.
"This is a manipulation tactic.
Classic Elena."
"Julian." Her voice was calm.
Almost kind.
"I'm not calling you.
You called me."
Another silence.
Longer this time.
Then she heard a second voice in the background.
Chloe's voice — sharp and low, asking what was wrong.
She heard Julian step away from the crowd.
The bells grew slightly muffled.
"How far along were you," he said slowly, "when the mediation happened?"
Elena said nothing.
"Elena." The smugness was completely gone now.
What replaced it was something she had never heard from him before.
Something close to fear.
"Answer me."
"You told three mediators and your entire legal team that I was infertile," she said quietly.
"You said it with such confidence."
The infant made a small sound.
A soft, perfect sound.
Julian heard it.
"Is that—"
"His name is Thomas," Elena said.
"He has your father's jawline."
The line went completely silent.
Then she heard Chloe's voice again, closer now, asking Julian why he had gone pale.
