Chapter 2: "Chloe Said Not to Tell."

The footage started normal.

Chloe on the sofa with Mia, cartoons on the TV, everything fine.

Then at 3:47pm — fourteen minutes before we even reached the venue — Chloe picked up her phone and typed something.

Four minutes later, the front door opened.

Not forced.

Not knocked.

Opened.

Like someone had a key.

The first person through the door was a boy, maybe eighteen, carrying a bag.

Then another.

Then three more behind him.

Then the camera angle shifted because someone had turned it.

Deliberately.

Toward the wall.

The rest of the footage was just white paint and the edge of the curtain.

My husband sat back in his chair.

"She knew it was there," he said.

"She knew exactly where it was."

I looked at Mia still asleep on the sofa and I couldn't speak.

Because Mia hadn't moved.

Not once in fourteen hours.

A six-year-old at a party that big, and she never left that sofa.

I walked back to the living room and crouched down next to her.

"Mia, love.

Did anything happen last night?"

She kept her eyes down.

"Chloe said not to tell."

What Mia said next stopped us both cold.
