Chapter 2: The Name She Said Next

Part 2 — continued from the comments ⬇️
Everyone on the beach turned.
Nadia had her arms wrapped around herself so fast I almost missed it — but not fast enough.
I saw.
Both arms.
From the wrist to just below the elbow.
Marks.
Old ones, faded to silver.
New ones, still pink at the edges.
She was shaking.
Not from cold.
The kind of shaking that comes from being seen when you've spent everything you have on not being seen.
I went to her without thinking.
I put my cardigan around her shoulders and I didn't say a word.
My son was already there.
He crouched in front of her and took her hands in both of his and said, very quietly, "It's okay.
It's just us."
She couldn't stop shaking.
Timmy came back with the towel, confused, still half-laughing.
My daughter-in-law pulled him away before he could ask anything.
Then Nadia looked up at me — not at my son.
At me.
And she said, "I was going to tell you.
Before the wedding.
I just didn't know how."
I said, "You don't have to tell me anything."
But she shook her head.
"No," she said.
"You need to know who did this."
My son went very still beside her.
And the name she said next was one I already knew.
