I took my terminally ill daughter to the ocean to fulfill her final wish — but on the first day of our trip, the hotel manager came to our room and said, "There's something you don't know about this trip."

I'm a single mother raising my 6-year-old daughter, Sophie, who was diagnosed with incurable cancer.

I remember that terrible day as if it were yesterday.

The doctor came up to me and said:

"I'm so sorry.

This is difficult to say, but treatment can only slow the progression of the disease.

We'll keep fighting for her, but you need to understand that her condition is getting worse."

What mother could ever be ready to hear something like that about her child?

My heart was breaking.

Besides Sophie, the only family I had left was my father.

Sophie absolutely adored her grandpa.

He often sat beside her during chemotherapy and read her all kinds of fairy tales.

Sometimes she'd ask him to read "The Little Mermaid" twice because she loved hearing stories about the ocean.

One day, while holding her grandpa's hand, Sophie quietly said:

"Grandpa, I wish I could see the ocean with my own eyes someday.

I'm so sad that I'll never get to see it..."

I pressed my hand over my mouth so she wouldn't hear me start crying.

All my money was going toward Sophie's treatment.

A trip to the ocean?

That would have been far too expensive for me.

That was when my father came over to me and said he'd help pay for the trip.

"Even if it's only for a few days, please take her so she can see the ocean," he said.

So that's exactly what I did.

I wanted to fulfill my daughter's final wish.

Her doctor gave us permission to travel; I booked a hotel near the ocean for a few days, and we flew there.

When Sophie saw the ocean for the first time, she immediately ran along the shore.

She splashed in the water, and for the first time in months, she looked genuinely happy.

Later, we headed back to our hotel room to change before dinner.

We had barely stepped inside when someone knocked on the door.

It was the hotel manager.

He handed me a box and said:

"I'm sorry, ma'am, but there's something you don't know about this trip.

I was asked to personally deliver this to you on your first day here."

Sophie looked at me in confusion.

I opened the box and nearly fainted when I saw what was inside.

The hotel manager cleared his throat and added:

"The man who contacted us sent the box himself, along with very specific written instructions about when we were supposed to give it to you."

I had absolutely no idea what was going on.

But when I saw the note saying who the box was from, I was even more shocked.

For a moment, it felt like I'd forgotten how to breathe.

Who sent that box — and what was inside it?
