Chapter 2: The Name on the Screen

I didn't go inside.

I didn't need to.

I stood in my own doorway and held up my phone so the nearest officer could see the deed pulled up on my screen.

Nina arrived two minutes later with a printed copy in her hand.

Owen's smile finally disappeared.

"Rachel, let's just talk about this privately—"

"There's nothing to talk about," Nina said.

"This property is in your sister's name.

Every person in this house is trespassing."

Mom stepped forward then.

Her voice was soft, almost gentle.

"We just thought…

you have so much, sweetheart.

Owen has the children.

He needs the space more than a single woman does."

I looked at her for a long moment.

"You went through my work bag."

She didn't deny it.

She just pressed her lips together and looked away.

That silence told me everything.

One of the officers asked Owen to step outside.

Heather grabbed her purse and started moving toward the door, but then something stopped her cold.

Her phone buzzed loudly on my kitchen counter where she'd left it face-up.

The name on the screen made my aunt gasp.

It was a name I recognized.

Someone who should have had no connection to any of this.

Someone who had known about this house even before my mother did.
