Chapter 2: Mama's Secret

Ryan dropped to his knees beside his son.

"Danny, who is that?

Who's down there?"

Danny couldn't answer.

He just kept pushing crackers through the vent, his small hand trembling.

Ryan grabbed a flashlight from the kitchen drawer and aimed it into the gap.

Two eyes stared back at him.

A child.

A little girl, maybe seven or eight, curled up in the crawl space beneath the floor.

"Hey — hey, it's okay.

I'm not going to hurt you." His voice cracked.

"Can you tell me your name?"

She didn't answer.

Just pulled her knees tighter to her chest.

Ryan stood up slowly and turned to Caroline.

She was already backing toward the hallway, arms crossed over her stomach, face white as paper.

"Caroline." His voice was low.

Controlled.

"How long has she been down there?"

"Ryan, I can explain—"

"How.

Long."

She pressed her lips together.

Looked at the floor.

"Three weeks," she finally whispered.

The word hit him like a wall.

Three weeks.

His son had been sneaking food to a child living under their kitchen floor for three weeks — and Caroline had known.

He looked at his wife.

Really looked at her.

"Who is she?"

Caroline opened her mouth.

Closed it again.

Then Danny tugged Ryan's sleeve and said the four words that stopped his heart completely.

"Daddy…

she's Mama's secret."
