Chapter 2: The Name Nobody Was Supposed to Know

Detective Miller left, and I lay there staring at the ceiling.

Three fr@ctured ribs.

A cheekbone inj*ry.

And parents who had already called everyone we knew to say I was unstable.

I had nothing.

No phone.

No ID.

No shoes.

But they had forgotten one thing.

They forgot about my grandmother's lawyer.

His name was Gerald Foss.

He had handled my grandparents' estate for over twenty years.

And three weeks before that night, I had quietly mailed him a copy of everything inside that blue folder.

I asked the nurse to borrow her phone.

Gerald picked up on the second ring.

"Savannah.

I've been waiting for your call."

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

Like a man who had been expecting this moment for a long time.

"Gerald, they took everything.

My phone, my ID—"

"I know," he said quietly.

"And Savannah…

there's something I should have told you sooner."

He paused.

"Your grandfather didn't leave that trust to your father.

He tried to change it six months before he p@ssed.

Douglas found out.

And he made sure that paperwork never reached me."

The room went very still.

"Gerald…

are you saying my father—"

"I'm saying the trust was never legally his to control.

And I'm saying there are two other people whose names should have been on those documents from the beginning."

He stopped.

"Savannah.

You have a brother.

And a sister.

And they have no idea you exist."
