Chapter 1: The Envelope He Handed Me at the Finish Line

I worked two jobs to help fulfill my husband's dream of becoming a doctor — at his graduation, he handed me divorce papers, but just as I was walking away, one of his classmates said, "Before you leave, there's something you should know."

When Nathan and I met, we were both in medical school.

We fell in love during our first year and used to talk constantly about the future — especially the day we'd both finally become doctors.

Then Nathan's family ran into serious financial trouble.

Suddenly, he couldn't afford his tuition anymore.

He was ready to leave medical school completely, and I couldn't stand the thought of him giving up on something he'd worked toward his whole life.

So I made a decision that changed everything.

I left medical school.

I told Nathan that having one doctor in the family would be enough.

Then I took two jobs so I could help cover his tuition and keep him in school.

Nathan promised me that once he became a doctor, we'd finally build the life we'd always talked about.

He said all the sacrifices would be worth it someday.

I believed him.

A year later, we got married.

For the next several years, I worked constantly while Nathan focused on his studies.

Every exam he passed felt like something we'd accomplished together.

Then graduation day finally arrived.

I sat in the audience with tears in my eyes, watching Nathan receive his degree and thinking that everything we'd struggled through had finally paid off.

After the ceremony, he walked over to me with a smile and handed me a large envelope.

For a moment, I thought he'd planned some kind of surprise.

Then I opened it.

Divorce papers.

I looked up at him, completely stunned.

Before I could even ask what was happening, Nathan turned around and walked away.

I stood there holding the papers, barely able to process what he'd just done.

Eventually, I started walking too, even though I had no idea where I was going.

I hadn't gotten far when one of Nathan's classmates stepped in front of me.

He looked genuinely concerned.

Then he lowered his voice and said,

"Before you leave...

there's something you should know."
