Chapter 2: The Woman Who Called Herself His Fiancée

The doctor's name was Dr.
Hale.
I'd seen him dozens of times over the past year, but I'd never seen him look at me the way he did in that moment.
"How long has Theo known someone else?" he asked quietly.
I felt the floor shift under me.
"What?"
Dr.
Hale looked uncomfortable, like a man who had stayed silent too long and couldn't anymore.
He told me that during Theo's final weeks of treatment, a woman had been calling the hospital.

"She visited twice," he said.
"Theo asked us not to mention it."
I couldn't speak.

Then my phone buzzed.
A message from a number I didn't recognize.
*You were never supposed to find out this way.
I'm sorry.
But he chose me a long time ago.*
My hands were shaking so badly I nearly dropped it.
Dr.
Hale was still watching me.
"There's more," he said.
"Something about the insurance policy.
You need to know before you sign anything."
What Dr.
May you like
Hale revealed next — and what that insurance policy contained — changes everything.
