Chapter 2: Someone Else Knew

Weston took Marguerite's arm and steered her toward a side corridor, away from the guests already filling the lobby.

"This is not the time," he said quietly.

"Then when, Weston?

After I sign the transfer papers?"

He didn't answer.

That silence told her everything.

Behind them, Priscilla had already turned back to her bridesmaids, laughing softly at something.

Not nervous.

Not even slightly afraid.

That was when Marguerite noticed the woman standing near the entrance — Priscilla's mother, whom she had never been allowed to meet.

The woman wasn't smiling.

She was watching Marguerite with an expression that looked almost like guilt.

Their eyes met for just a moment before the woman looked away.

Marguerite's sister leaned close and whispered, "She recognized you.

Why would she recognize you?"

Marguerite reached into her small handbag and touched the slim recording device she had carried every day for six weeks.

She had enough.

More than enough.

But what she hadn't expected — what no one in that ballroom could have expected — was the envelope that arrived at the front desk thirty minutes before the ceremony.

Addressed to Weston.

Marked *private*.

Delivered by a lawyer Marguerite had never contacted.

Someone else knew.
