Lisa's voice dropped low.
She thought no one could hear her.
"Your grandma isn't waking up because she wants to.
She's staying under because the doctors say her brain may never fully recover.
And when she doesn't…
everything she owns goes to me."
I felt Walter go still beside me.
"That's not true," he said quietly.
"Oh, it is." Lisa's heels clicked as she moved closer.
"She never updated her will after your father d*ed.
I'm the only living adult child.
That house, her savings, everything — it all comes to me."
"She's going to wake up."
"Walter." Her voice turned cold.
"Even if she does, she won't be the same.
The doctors already told me she may not remember things clearly.
And a woman who can't remember clearly…" She paused.
"Can't exactly argue about what she signed."
My chest tightened.
What did she mean, what she signed?
I hadn't signed anything.
Had I?
Then I heard a sound I didn't expect.
Paper.
Lisa was unfolding something.
"I had this prepared three days ago," she said softly.
"All I need is one more signature."
Walter's voice cracked.
"You can't do that to her."
"I already did, sweetheart."
The room went completely silent.
