Chapter 2: The Case She Built Against Me

Evan picked up the envelope before Helen could reach it.

His hands were shaking as he tore it open.

I pulled myself up against the cabinet, holding Noah against my chest, trying to read Evan's face.

It changed completely.

"Mom." His voice dropped to something I had never heard before.

"What did you do?"

"It's nothing.

Unstable.

Dangerous.

Unable to care for Noah.

The report had been filed the day I came home from the hospital.

Helen had made the call herself.

"I was protecting my grandson," she said.

"You were barely conscious.

You couldn't even stand up—"

"Because you wouldn't let her rest!" Evan's voice cracked.

"You sent the nurse away.

You made her carry groceries.

She's five days out of surgery and you filed a report to take her son?"

Helen lifted her chin.

"Noah deserves better."

I looked down at my baby.

My five-day-old baby.

And I understood — she hadn't come to help me recover.

She had come to build a case against me.

Then Evan's phone rang.

The screen read: FAMILY COURT — CARTER CASE.

😨
