Chapter 2: What She Left on the Phone

The ambulance arrived in eight minutes.

I watched them lift Renata onto the stretcher while Milo cried against my chest.

Her face was still pale.

Her lips were dry.

The paramedic said her blood pressure had dropped dangerously low — likely from dehydration and exhaustion combined.

Dehydration.

Exhaustion.

While my mother sat ten feet away finishing her plate.

Colette stood in the doorway, arms crossed.

"She'll be fine.

You're overreacting."

I turned to face her slowly.

"She collapsed, Mom."

"People don't collapse from cooking one meal."

"She has an infection.

She hasn't slept in five days.

And you knew that."

She waved her hand.

"You babies her too much.

That's the problem."

I didn't answer.

I strapped Milo into his car seat and followed the ambulance.

But as I backed out of the driveway, I noticed something through the window.

Colette had sat back down at the table.

She picked up her fork and kept eating.

At the hospital, the nurse handed me Renata's phone — it had fallen from her pocket.

The screen lit up with a message thread I hadn't seen before.

It was from my mother.

Sent three days ago.

The first line stopped me cold.
