Chapter 2: The Brother Who Came Back

“Evan Bellamy.”
Grant’s hand froze inches from the documents.
I stopped breathing.
Evan was Grant’s younger brother—the man who had vanished from our lives two years before my marriage ended.
The elevator doors opened again.
Evan stepped into the lobby, pale and unsteady.
Jocelyn pulled the baby closer.
“No,” she whispered.
“He wasn’t supposed to come.”
Grant turned on her.
“Why are you afraid of my brother?”
“I can explain.”
“Then explain now.”
The doctor raised the first document.
“This is the corrected fertility report from your marriage to Laurel.
The original result was entered under the wrong patient’s name.”
My knees weakened.
Grant stared at him.
“What are you saying?”
“Laurel was never the reason you couldn’t have children.”
The color drained from Grant’s face.
He looked at me, but I could only hear every cruel silence he had used to make me blame myself.
“Then whose result was it?” Grant demanded.
The doctor held up the second page.
Evan stepped forward.
“Before he answers, ask Jocelyn why she begged me to disappear.”
Grant’s eyes moved to the little boy in her arms.
Jocelyn began shaking.
The doctor placed the second result in Grant’s hand.
Grant read one line, looked at the baby, and whispered, “This says I’m not his father.”
Then Evan said, “That isn’t the only lie she told you.”
