Chapter 4: What Rosa Saw

The word landed like something physical.

I sat back down.

Not because I chose to.

Because my legs made the decision for me.

"Say that again."

"I shouldn't have kept it." Rosa reached into the pocket of her apron and placed a small USB drive on the coffee table beside the teddy bear.

"I've been carrying this for eight months.

I didn't know who to trust."

I stared at it.

"Where did you get that?"

"Miss Claire gave it to me.

The morning of the accident.

She came into the kitchen before you were awake and she pressed it into my hand." Rosa's voice was steady, but her chin was trembling.

"She said, 'If anything happens to me, give this to someone who isn't connected to Dorian Harlan.' She said she didn't know yet who that was.

She said to wait until I was sure."

"And you waited eight months."

"I waited until tonight.

Until I saw you walk through that door and choose your daughter over that woman without a second's hesitation." She looked at me directly.

"That's how I knew."

I picked up the USB drive.

"Do you know what's on it?"

"No.

She didn't tell me."

I went to my office.

Rosa followed with Lily asleep over her shoulder, the teddy bear tucked under the child's arm.

Rosa settled Lily on the office couch and covered her with a blanket while I pulled up my laptop.

The drive had one folder.

Inside the folder, one file.

A video.

I pressed play.

Claire appeared on screen.

She was sitting at the desk in this very office.

The timestamp in the corner read eleven months ago — four months before she p@ssed.

She looked tired.

But her voice was clear.

"If you're watching this, then something happened to me and I didn't get to explain it in person.

I'm sorry.

I'm so sorry I couldn't find another way."

I couldn't speak.

I just watched.

"His name is Dorian Harlan.

He's Vanessa's older brother.

I found out six weeks ago when I hired someone to look into the company that's been quietly buying shares in your firm.

Harlan Family Holdings.

It traces back to Dorian.

And Dorian traces back to Vanessa."

She leaned forward slightly.

"She's not who she told you she was.

You haven't met her yet — I know that.

But Dorian told me she's already been introduced into your professional circle.

They've been planning this for over a year.

The goal isn't you.

The goal is Lily."

I stopped breathing.

"Lily is the named beneficiary of a trust that Claire's parents — your daughter's grandparents — established before they p@ssed.

It matures when Lily turns eighteen.

The value at maturity is projected at just over eleven million dollars.

Dorian found out about it six months ago through a contact inside the estate law firm."

On screen, Claire pressed her lips together.

"If Vanessa marries you and then contests custody through the Harlan Holdings clause — the one I was pressured into signing, the one I've been trying to have voided — Lily's trust falls under a joint guardianship review.

Dorian has a lawyer who says they can redirect the trust distributions during that review period.

Legally.

It would take years to undo.

If it could be undone at all."

She looked directly into the camera.

"I signed that document because Dorian told me that if I didn't, he would make sure you lost your firm.

I was scared.

I was wrong to sign it.

I've been trying to fix it ever since."

A pause.

"There's a second file.

It's everything I found.

The communications.

The share transfers.

The name of the contact inside the estate firm." Another pause.

"His name is on there too.

The attorney.

The one you've trusted for years."

The video ended.

Rosa and I sat in silence for a long moment.

Then Lily stirred on the couch, turned over, and pulled the teddy bear tighter against her chest without waking up.

I looked at my phone.

Vanessa had called six more times from that unknown number.

I opened the second file.

The first name at the top of Claire's document was Dorian Harlan.

The second name was my attorney, Gerald Foss.
