Chapter 2: What She Saw

The call lasted four minutes.

No names.

No details.

Just a time, a location, and the sound of men who had once followed me into places that didn't exist on any map saying two words I hadn't heard in seventeen years.

"We're coming."

I sat in that parking lot until the sun came up.

When I walked back inside, Marcus was waiting by the elevator.

He pulled me into an empty hallway and kept his voice low.

"Caleb.

There's something you need to know."

I waited.

"This wasn't random.

Three witnesses saw what happened.

Two of them already recanted by midnight.

The third…" He stopped.

"She's a sixteen-year-old girl.

She came in two hours ago with her mother.

She's terrified."

My chest tightened.

"She saw everything," Marcus said.

"She has it on her phone."

"Where is she now?"

He looked at me carefully.

"That's the problem.

Sheriff Dale Vance's deputy showed up here an hour ago.

Said he needed to speak with her.

Her mother let him in."

I was already moving.

Marcus grabbed my arm.

"Caleb.

The deputy is Dale Vance's son."

I stopped.

The hallway felt very quiet.

"Which room?" I said.
