Chapter 2: The Name That Silenced the Rain

Every g*n was still pointed at me.

I could feel the rain soaking through my uniform.

My hands were shaking.

But Dante's grip on my wrist was steady, and his eyes never left my face.

"I heard her," I said.

"At the restaurant.

Your wife.

She was in the private booth with a man.

They said the brakes were cut."

Something moved behind his eyes.

Not surprise.

Something colder.

"Which man?"

"I don't know his name.

Dark hair.

A scar below his left ear."

One of Dante's men stepped forward and spoke low.

"Boss.

That's Marco."

The name landed like a stone in still water.

Dante didn't react.

He just looked at me for a long moment, then slowly released my wrist.

"Get her a coat," he said quietly.

"And get me a phone."

They moved fast.

Someone draped a jacket over my shoulders.

Someone else pressed a phone into Dante's hand.

He dialed.

It rang four times.

Then Vanessa's voice came through, warm and unhurried.

"Dante?

Where are you?

I've been worried sick—"

He said nothing.

The silence stretched.

And then Vanessa said something that made every man on that road go completely still.

Something she should never have said if she believed her husband was already g*ne.
