Chapter 2: What She Kept

**PART 2**
Jessi's hand was shaking, but her eyes were steady.
"I hid the drive, Luca.
Before they found me.
It's still there."
"Where?"
She opened her mouth — then the door swung open.
A man in a gray suit stepped inside the room.
He wasn't a doctor.
He wasn't a nurse.
He looked at Jessi first, then slowly turned to me.
"Mr.
Vance.
I'm counsel for Sterling Development.
My client wants you to know there are no hard feelings." He set a white envelope on the bedside table.
"That's a generous settlement offer.
Sign it tonight, and this whole situation disappears quietly."
I didn't touch the envelope.
"You walked into a hospital room where my wife is in a fixation frame," I said.
"And you brought a settlement offer."
He straightened his jacket.
"I'd encourage you not to be emotional about this."
Jessi's voice came out low and clear.
"Tell Flynn the recordings aren't the only thing I kept."
The lawyer's expression didn't change.
But his hand — the one holding his briefcase — went completely still.
That was the second clue.
He knew exactly what she meant.
And so did I.
I pulled out my phone and made one call.
Not to a lawyer.
Not to the police.
To the one person Flynn Sterling should have prayed I never contacted.
