Chapter 2: The Color Left Her Face

Part 2 ⬇️
Two minutes later, Vanessa returned with a security guard at her side.
"Sir, I need you to come with me."
Daniel didn't move.
He folded his napkin and placed it on the table.
"Sophie, finish your lemonade."
"Sir—"
"I heard you the first time, Ms.
Cole."
The guard stepped closer.
Nearby diners had gone quiet.
A woman at the next table pulled her husband's sleeve.
Then the front door opened.
A man in a dark suit walked in carrying a leather folder.
Behind him, two more.
They moved quickly, scanning the room until they found booth seventeen.
Vanessa turned.
"Can I help you?"
The man in front didn't answer her.
He looked past her, directly at Daniel.
"Mr.
Mercer.
I have the audit file."
The color left Vanessa's face.
"Mr…
Mercer?"
Daniel stood slowly.
He buttoned his jacket.
"Thank you, James."
Vanessa's mouth opened.
Nothing came out.
The security guard took one step back.
Sophie looked up from her lemonade.
"Daddy, do those men work for you?"
Daniel looked down at her and smiled.
"Some of them, yes."
Then he turned to Vanessa.
His voice was calm.
Completely calm.
"I'd like to see your employee records for the past six months.
All of them."
Vanessa's hand went to her name badge.
