Chapter 2: What She Kept in Her Purse

— PART 2 —
Ethan didn't move.
He just stood there on the pavement staring at his mother.
"What did she give you, Mom?"
Margaret's chin trembled.
"Ethan, this is not the place—"
"What did Claire give you eight years ago?"
The silence between them was louder than the traffic on Congress Avenue.

"I was protecting you.
You had just started the business.

Claire's eyes were dry.
She had no tears left for this moment.
She had cried them all years ago.
"I sent that letter the same week I found out," she said quietly.
"I never got a reply.
I thought you didn't want us."
Ethan turned back to his mother.
"Where is it?
Do you still have it?"
Margaret's hand moved — just slightly — toward her purse.
And that small, involuntary movement told Ethan everything.
---
What Margaret pulled out of that purse next left Ethan unable to speak.
