Chapter 2: The Man in the Gray Coat

Part 2 ⬇️

Standing in the doorway was a woman in a dark uniform — a police officer.

She wasn't alone.

Another officer stood just behind her.

They weren't looking at us.

They were looking at the man with the laptop.

His face went still.

"Sir," the first officer said, stepping forward.

"We need a word with you outside."

The woman beside him stood up fast.

"What is this about?"

"Please stay seated, ma'am."

The café had gone quiet.

Every head turned.

The man pushed back his chair slowly.

"There must be some mistake."

"No mistake," the officer said.

"We've been looking for you since this morning."

I didn't understand.

I looked down at Lindsey.

He was still staring at the door — but now a third person had walked in.

An older man in a gray coat.

He scanned the room, then his eyes landed on Lindsey.

His face crumpled.

"Lindsey," he said softly.

Lindsey let go of my sleeve.

"Grandpa Frank?"

I had never met Frank.

He was my son-in-law's father — the one who had stopped returning my calls after the accident.

The one I thought wanted nothing to do with us.

He crossed the room in four steps and dropped to one knee in front of Lindsey.

Then he looked up at me, and his eyes were wet.

"I owe you an explanation," he said.

"A long one."

The officer was still talking to the man by the laptop.

I caught one word clearly.

Fr@ud.
