Chapter 2: She Was Warning Me

My hands were shaking as I looked down at the envelope.

It had my name on it.

Written in Helen's handwriting.

"What is this?" I asked him.

He shook his head slowly.

"I was instructed not to say anything more.

Only to make sure you received it today.

At the grave."

I tore it open right there.

Inside was a single folded letter — and a smaller sealed envelope tucked behind it.

The smaller one had three words written on the front.

*Do not open.*

I started reading the letter.

My throat tightened after the first paragraph.

Helen wasn't apologizing.

She was warning me.

She wrote that my father's heart attack hadn't been as sudden as everyone believed.

That in the weeks before he d*ed, he had been trying to reach a lawyer.

That someone had made sure he never got the chance.

And then the last line of the letter stopped me cold.

*The person who needs to read the sealed envelope is already watching you.

They were at the service this morning.

Don't let them know you've opened this.*

I looked up slowly.

Two of Helen's acquaintances were still standing near the grave.

One of them was staring directly at me.
