Chapter 2: Her Name on His Screen

I didn't move.

I just looked at him and said, "Then explain."

Liam ran both hands through his hair.

He looked like a man trying to find a door that wasn't there.

"It's not what you think," he said.

"You don't know what I think," I told him.

"Start talking."

He pulled out a chair and sat down heavily.

"It involves someone you know," he said.

"Someone close to us.

And I promised — I swore — I wouldn't say anything until the time was right."

My stomach dropped.

"Who?"

He wouldn't look at me.

"Liam.

Who?"

He opened his mouth — and then his phone buzzed on the counter.

He glanced at the screen.

And I saw it.

Just for a second.

But I saw the name.

It was my sister.

He grabbed the phone before I could say a word.

Stood up.

Turned toward the window.

"I can't talk right now," he said quietly into the phone.

Then he paused.

His shoulders went rigid.

He turned back slowly and looked at me.

"She knows," he said into the phone.

His voice was barely above a whisper.

"She already knows."
