Chapter 2: The Wall of Photographs

Part 2 ⬇️

The wall behind the elderly woman was covered in photographs.

Black and white.

Faded.

Dozens of them.

Every single one showed a young soldier — and I recognized his face immediately.

It was Grandpa Henry.

Decades younger, but unmistakably him.

In some photos he was laughing with local families.

In others he was helping rebuild a structure that had been bl0wn apart.

In one, he was holding a newborn baby.

"Who is she?" I asked, my voice barely steady.

The old woman pressed a hand to her chest.

"My mother named her after the ocean.

Henry delivered her the night the bombs fell.

My grandmother was alone.

He stayed with her for hours."

I couldn't speak.

"He saved both of them," the manager said quietly.

"Our family has been searching for him ever since.

We never knew his last name.

Only Henry.

Only Ohio."

Then the woman reached behind her and lifted something from the shelf.

A letter.

Sealed.

My grandfather's handwriting on the front.

"He left this," she said.

"He asked us to give it to his family — but only if they ever came back."

My hands were shaking as I took it.

That was the moment I heard footsteps on the stairs behind me.

Grandpa Henry had woken up.
