I stared at him.
"A favor."
"Yes."
"You want a favor.
Right now."
He had the decency to look slightly embarrassed.
"It's not a big deal."
"Grant."
"My mother is coming for dinner on Saturday."
I waited.
"And I may have told her that you'd make her pot roast."
The kitchen went very quiet.
I set down the spoon I was holding before I said something I couldn't take back.
"You told your mother I'd make pot roast."
"She specifically asked for it."
"And you said yes.
Without asking me."
"I didn't think it would be—"
"A problem?"
He didn't answer.
I looked at him for a long moment.
Fourteen years of moved shoes and rinsed plates and carried dishes and folded laundry and silent favors that were never called favors because they were just expected.
And now this.
"Grant, I haven't agreed to cook anything for anyone."
He straightened up.
"She's my mother."
"I know who she is."
"She's coming a long way."
"I know."
"So you'll do it?"
I picked the spoon back up and turned toward the stove.
"I haven't decided yet."
He went very still behind me.
Then, quietly — almost too quietly — he said her name.
Not his mother's name.
A different name entirely.
One I hadn't heard in years.
