Chapter 2: The Woman in the Red Dress

My hands were shaking as the photographer turned her camera screen toward me.
It was a photo taken earlier that evening — Julian, standing near the far end of the room, his arm around a woman in a red dress.
Not a casual arm around a colleague.
Close.
Intimate.
His lips near her ear.
Her hand resting on his chest.
"I didn't mean to capture it," she said quietly.
"But I thought you should know."
I couldn't breathe.
I looked across the room.
Julian was still there, laughing with his investors — completely relaxed, completely unbothered.
Like I didn't exist.
I walked straight toward him.
"Julian." My voice came out steadier than I expected.
He turned, and for just a second, something flashed across his face.
Not surprise.
Not guilt.
Fear.
"Who is she?" I asked.
He stepped closer and lowered his voice.
"This is not the place."
"You introduced me to everyone here like I was nobody.
Like I was a stranger.
After everything I gave up for you." My voice cracked.
"So tell me — who is she?"
Before he could answer, I felt a hand on my arm.
I turned around.
It was the woman in the red dress.
She looked at me calmly — almost coldly — and said four words I will never forget.
"You should ask him why."
---
What did she mean by that?
What does she know about Julian that I don't?
