Chapter 2: The Man My Father Trusted

PART 2
The phone rang twice before he picked up.
"Genevieve." His voice was calm.
Steady.
Like he had been waiting for exactly this call.
"He let her go," I whispered.
"He let Hazel go."
A long silence.
Then: "I know.
I've been watching."
His name was Arthur Crain.
My father had introduced us three years ago, the week before my wedding, with a single warning: *"If Julian ever shows you who he really is — call Arthur first.
Before you do anything else."*
I had never asked why.
I trusted my father.
Now Arthur spoke carefully.
"Genevieve, I need you to stay calm and stay in that house one more night.
Can you do that?"
"Why?"
"Because Ximena didn't reject that medical request on her own."
I gripped the phone tighter.
"What do you mean?"
"The denial came from Julian's account.
His login.
His approval code.
Ximena was following a standing instruction he set up four months ago — before Hazel's last crisis."
The room tilted.
"He knew," I said.
It wasn't a question.
"There's more," Arthur said quietly.
"And you need to see the documents before he realizes what's coming."
Downstairs, I heard Julian's footsteps on the stairs.
