Chapter 2: The Name on the Account

My hands were shaking as I held those bank statements.
The transfers went back eighteen months.
Thousands of dollars.
Every few weeks, like clockwork.
And the name on the receiving account — I had seen it before.
In Ryan's phone.
In a message he said was nothing.
"Ryan." My voice came out quiet.
"Who is she?"
He finally looked at me.
But it wasn't guilt on his face.
It was pity.
"You were never supposed to find out this way," he said.
Diane stepped forward.
"This family has been carrying your mother's debt for years.
We were only protecting what was ours."
"Her house isn't yours," I said.
"And neither is my money."
Mom reached out and touched my arm.
Her hand was trembling.
"There's something else," she whispered.
"Something I found before they took my medication.
I wrote it down.
I hid it."
Diane's expression shifted.
Just slightly.
But I saw it.
Fear.
Mom looked at me with steady eyes and said, "Check the lining of my blue coat, sweetheart.
Everything is in there."
Before I could move, Ryan stepped between us.
"Don't," he said quietly.
"You don't want to do that."
