Chapter 2: The Envelope on the Doorstep

By 9 p.m., I had counted sixty-eight missed calls.

Dad.

Dad.

Vanessa.

Dad.

A number I didn't recognize.

Dad again.

I didn't answer a single one.

At 11:54, my doorbell rang.

Dad looked older than he had two hours ago.

Vanessa stood half a step behind him, her gala smile completely gone.

"Claire.

We need to talk."

"It's nearly midnight," I said.

"Miriam sent us a letter." His voice was tight.

"What did you do?"

"I turned thirty-five," I said.

"Mom's trust did the rest."

Vanessa pushed forward.

"You can't just take what isn't yours."

I looked at her calmly.

"The land was never his to give you.

It was always mine to protect."

Dad's face shifted — not anger exactly.

Something closer to fear.

"Claire, listen to me.

There are things about your mother's arrangement you don't fully understand.

Things Miriam didn't tell you."

That stopped me.

"What things?"

He glanced at Vanessa.

She gave the smallest shake of her head.

"Not here," he said quietly.

"Not tonight."

He reached into his jacket and placed an envelope on my doorstep.

Old paper.

My mother's handwriting on the front.

*For Claire — only after the transfer.*

My hand didn't move toward it.

Whatever was inside had been waiting for three days.
