Chapter 2: The Ring On Her Finger

Part 2 ⬇️
Brandon was in our bed.
And Kayla was next to him.
My sister.
My own sister, in my apartment, in my bedroom, in the bed I shared with the man I was supposed to marry in four months.
I couldn't move.
I couldn't speak.
My ribs were still taped and every breath already hurt, but this — this was a different kind of pain entirely.
Lily's hand tightened around mine.
Brandon saw me first.
He sat up fast, his face going white.
"Nicole — wait.
It's not —"
"Don't," I said.
My voice came out quieter than I expected.
"Don't say another word."
Kayla hadn't moved.
She was just sitting there, sheet pulled up, not looking at me.
Not apologizing.
Not crying.
Then she said something I will never forget for the rest of my life.
"Nicole, you were gone for ten days.
We didn't know if you were even going to make it."
I stared at her.
"So that's your reason," I said.
She finally looked up.
And I saw it — not guilt.
Not shame.
She looked relieved that it was finally out.
That's when I noticed the ring on her finger.
My engagement ring.
