Chapter 2: Something They Didn't Want Me to Know

Part 2 ⬇️
The next morning, I called my lawyer.
Not because I was angry.
Because I was finally thinking clearly.
I asked him to pull up my will — the one I'd last updated when Lucas bought his house.
The one that left him nearly everything.
"Are you sure?" my lawyer asked.
"I've never been more sure of anything," I said.
That afternoon, Lucas came to check on me.
He stood in the doorway of the guest room with a cup of tea, smiling like nothing had happened.
"Sleep okay, Mom?"
I looked at him for a long moment.
"Better than I have in years," I said.
He didn't notice anything different.
But I did.
I noticed the way he glanced at his watch.
The way he didn't sit down.
The way he was already halfway out the door before I finished speaking.
Then his wife called from downstairs.
"Lucas — Zoe's on the phone.
She wants to know about the house."
He froze.
Just for a second.
But I saw it.
"What house?" I asked quietly.
He laughed it off.
"Nothing, Mom.
Just some family stuff."
But his eyes didn't match his smile.
And I realized — this wasn't just about me being a burden.
There was something else going on.
Something they didn't want me to know.
