I didn't sign.
I set the folded papers on the porch railing and looked at my father.
"I'm not signing anything today."
Dad's jaw tightened.
"You don't have a choice."
"I have every choice.
My name is on that mortgage.
Not yours."
Mom pushed the car door open and stepped out.
Her voice dropped low, the way it always did when she wanted to sound reasonable while saying something cruel.
"Connor.
We raised you.
We gave you everything.
This is how you repay us?"
Natalie's hand found my arm.
She didn't squeeze.
She just stayed there.
"You want to talk about repayment?" I said.
"Let's talk about it."
I reached into my back pocket and pulled out a single folded sheet.
A payment summary.
Every mortgage transfer.
Every bill.
Every month for six years.
Dad's eyes moved to the paper.
Something shifted in his face.
"Where did you get that?"
"I printed it this morning."
Mom's expression changed too.
Not guilt.
Something closer to calculation.
Then my brother's car pulled up behind theirs.
He got out slowly.
He looked at Dad.
Then at me.
Then at the paper in my hand.
And the look on his face told me he already knew something I didn't.
"Connor," he said quietly.
"There's something Mom and Dad never told you about that house."
The driveway went completely silent.
