Chapter 2: The Other Folder

Natalie drove three blocks before asking, “Do you want to know what he’s saying?”

I turned my phone back on.

Seventeen missed calls.

Nine messages.

The first said, We need to talk.

The last said, You had no right to take those financial records.

My hands went cold.

“He’s not worried about me,” I whispered.

“He’s worried about the folder.”

Then an unknown number called.

I answered.

“Hello?”

“Rachel?” Claire said.

“Daniel told me what you did.”

“What I did?”

“He says you emptied the accounts and disappeared.”

I almost laughed.

“Daniel moved $240,000, Claire.

Did he forget to mention that?”

Silence.

Then she said, “He told me you approved it.”

“I approved nothing.”

Claire’s voice dropped.

“Then why is your signature on the transfer form?”

Before I could answer, Daniel grabbed her phone.

“Rachel, come home.

Now.”

“No.”

“You don’t understand what you’ve started.”

“I understand exactly what you started.”

His voice hardened.

“If Rebecca Shaw sees those papers, you’ll regret it.”

Natalie glanced at me.

I put the call on speaker.

“Daniel,” I said calmly, “Rebecca already has copies.”

He stopped breathing for a moment.

Then someone knocked loudly on Natalie’s front door.

Natalie checked the camera and turned pale.

“It isn’t Daniel,” she whispered.

“Rachel…

it’s Claire.

And she’s holding another folder.”
