Chapter 2: The Signature That Wasn’t Mine

Brenda’s father pushed back his chair.
“You can’t throw a pregnant woman out.”
“I’m not discussing the house yet,” I replied.
“I’m discussing the $45,000 missing from my account.”
Brandon stared at me.
“What are you talking about?”
I placed eight bank statements on the table.
Brenda’s face turned pale when he saw the transfers.
“Every payment went to an account ending in 6142,” I said.
“Your wife’s name is on it.”
“That money was for the baby,” Brenda snapped.
“What baby needs $45,000 before it is born?” I asked.
Her mother reached for the statements, but I covered them with my hand.
“Sit down.
I’m not finished.”
Then I showed Brandon photographs of my furniture being loaded onto a truck.
His eyes moved slowly toward Brenda.
“You told me Mom donated those things.”
“They were worthless!” she shouted.
A knock sounded at the front door.
Mrs.
Gable stepped inside, clutching a brown envelope.
“Catherine, I found this beside your trash bags.
I thought you should see it.”
I opened it and felt my hands go cold.
Inside was an application to transfer ownership of my house—and beneath my printed name was a signature I had never written.
Brandon looked at Brenda.
“Tell me you didn’t do this.”
Brenda said nothing.
But her mother suddenly whispered, “You promised Catherine would never find that.”
