Chapter 2: The Name on the Screen

Every eye at the table turned to me.
Greg's smile didn't disappear.
It froze.
"To my daughter," I said, "who deserves a man who is exactly what he claims to be."
I looked at Greg as I said it.
He looked back at me.
We both knew what I meant.
My daughter laughed and squeezed his hand.
"Isn't she sweet?"
Greg lifted his glass.
His hand was steady.
I'll give him that.
After dinner, I asked my daughter if we could speak privately in the kitchen.
"Mom, whatever it is, can it wait?
Greg's here and—"
"It cannot wait," I said quietly.
She followed me in.
I told her everything.
The street.
Hannah.
The arm.
The cane.
Every word he said.
She stared at me.
"Mom…
Greg told me about that.
He said an older woman misunderstood a conversation he was having with a friend."
I felt the air leave the room.
"Hannah was not his friend.
She was terrified."
"He said you'd say that." Her voice had gone flat.
"He warned me you might not like him."
Before I could respond, Greg appeared in the doorway.
He was smiling again.
Calm.
Unhurried.
"Everything okay in here?" he asked.
And then his phone buzzed on the counter.
He'd left it there during dinner.
The screen lit up.
The name on it was Hannah.
