Chapter 2: The Note in the Diaper Bag

We got in the car.
Sophie held the baby against her chest and stared straight ahead.
I couldn't drive.
I just sat there.
"Sophie.
Talk to me.
Right now."
She took a slow breath.
"Her name is Lily.
She's three weeks old."
"Where is her mother?"
Sophie's jaw tightened.
"She's gone, Mom."
"Gone where?"
"She left her.
At the resort.
In one of the staff rooms." Sophie's voice cracked.
"I found her alone.
She'd been crying for hours."
My chest went cold.
"Who left her there?"
"A girl named Mara.
She was one of my roommates." Sophie finally looked at me.
"She packed her things in the middle of the night and just...
walked out."
"Did anyone call the police?"
"The manager did.
They came.
They said they'd contact child services and someone would come for Lily within 48 hours." Her arms tightened around the baby.
"But nobody came, Mom.
Three days passed and nobody came."
I stared at my daughter.
"So you just took her?"
Sophie's eyes filled.
"I couldn't leave her there alone again."
I looked at the baby.
Lily.
Tiny fingers.
Eyes closed.
Completely unaware.
Then Sophie said something that stopped my heart.
"Mom...
Mara left a note.
And I think you need to read it."
She reached into the diaper bag and pulled out a folded piece of paper.
