Chapter 2: The Envelope on the Back Seat

Part 2 ⬇️
I didn't wait.
I got into my car, closed the door quietly, and sat there for a moment with both hands in my lap.
Through the windshield I could see Olivia still standing at the gate, her phone pressed to her ear, her free hand gripping the front of her gown.
She was calling someone.
I could see her mouth moving fast.
My own phone rang thirty seconds later.
I didn't answer.
Then a text came through.
Not from Olivia.
From Daniel.
Her new husband.
*"Eleanor.
Please.
We can fix this.
Just come back inside.
Nobody has to know what happened."*
I stared at that message for a long time.
Nobody has to know.
That told me everything.
This wasn't just Olivia's decision.
Daniel had known.
He had stood behind that gate, in his rented suit, and let his bride remove her own mother from the guest list like a name crossed off a spreadsheet.
I set the phone face-down on the passenger seat.
Then I noticed something on the back seat.
A cream-colored envelope I hadn't put there.
My name was written on the front in handwriting I didn't recognize.
I reached back and picked it up.
Inside was a single photograph.
Olivia and Daniel, laughing at a restaurant table.
Sitting across from them was a woman I had never seen before.
But someone had written four words across the bottom of the photo in red ink.
*She knows about the will.*
---
What Eleanor found inside that envelope changes everything.
The truth behind Olivia's cruelty goes far deeper than one wedding day.
