Chapter 1: The Flowers I Was Still Holding

I opened a hospital room door with flowers in my hand and found my husband signing a birth-certificate worksheet beside another woman's bed.

A newborn slept between them.

Daniel stood so fast his chair hit the wall.

"Laura — this isn't how I wanted you to find out."

"Find out what?

That you have a baby?"

The woman in the bed stared at me.

"You said she knew."

He did not deny it.

He looked at the bassinet instead.

"The baby didn't do anything wrong.

I'm trying to make sure he has stability."

I picked up the worksheet.

Daniel Bennett was listed as the father.

The mother, Nicole, whispered, "He told me your marriage was over."

Daniel said, "It is, in every way that matters."

A nurse returned with another packet.

"Mr.

Bennett, we still need the household address confirmed."

I looked down.

The baby's residence was listed as my address.

The house Daniel and I still shared.

"He doesn't live there," I said.

Nicole turned to him.

"You said Laura was moving out."

Daniel reached for the paperwork.

"This is just for benefits.

We can sort the details later."

I pulled the packet back.

It was a dependent enrollment form connected to Daniel's family plan.

Then I saw one more line.
