Chapter 2: What Was Inside the Envelope

Inside the envelope was a photograph.
Evan.
A woman I didn't recognize.
A baby.
The date printed in the corner was eighteen months ago.
My hands were shaking so hard I almost dropped it.
"What is this?" I asked.
Evan's voice dropped low.
"It's not what you think."
"Then tell me what it is."
He said nothing.
He just looked at the photo the way a man looks at something he buried and never expected to see again.
Vanessa hadn't left yet.
The staff had stopped when they saw my face.
"That's his daughter," she said quietly.
"Her name is Lily.
She's fourteen months old."
The garden went completely silent.
I turned to Evan.
"You have a child?"
"I was going to tell you—"
"When?" My voice cracked.
"After the ceremony?
After we signed the papers?"
He reached for my arm.
I stepped back.
"There's more in the envelope," Vanessa said.
I looked down.
Behind the photograph was a folded document.
I opened it with trembling fingers.
It was a court filing.
His name.
A woman named Claire.
A custody dispute — dated three weeks before he proposed to me.
Three weeks.
He had proposed to me knowing he was already fighting for custody of a child he had never mentioned.
I looked up at him.
He didn't deny it.
And that was when I heard someone behind me say his name — a voice I didn't recognize — and I turned around to find a woman standing at the garden entrance, holding a small child on her hip.
---
What happened when that woman walked in changed everything.
