Chapter 2: The Document on the Armrest

Victoria settled into her First Class seat like she owned the cabin.
She ordered champagne before the doors closed and told the flight attendant to "make sure the Economy passengers don't wander up here."
I took my seat near the back and waited.
Fifteen minutes later, the plane stopped moving.
The captain's voice came over the intercom.
"Ladies and gentlemen, we are holding briefly at the request of airline management.
We apologize for the delay."
Victoria's head snapped up.
Then the cabin door opened.
Captain Reeves walked the full length of the aisle — past Business, past Premium — and stopped directly beside my row.
He straightened, clicked his heels, and saluted.
"Mr.
Vance.
My apologies for any inconvenience.
We are ready when you are."
The entire First Class cabin turned around.
Victoria's champagne glass stopped halfway to her lips.
"What did he just call you?"
I stood slowly and buttoned my blazer.
"He called me by my name, Victoria."
Her face went pale.
"That's…
that's not possible.
Your father left everything to the family trust.
I was there when he signed it.
I watched him sign it."
I looked at her for a long moment.
"I know you were there," I said quietly.
"That's actually why I need you to come with me."
I reached into my inside pocket and placed a single folded document on her armrest.
She looked down.
Her name was on it.
So was her lawyer's.
And a date — three days before my father passed.
