Chapter 2: The Walls He Built for Me

Inside the garage, every wall was covered in photographs.

Decades of them.

Me at eighteen, laughing outside the school gates.

Me walking to church with my father.

Me in my wedding dress the day I married Harold.

He had never stopped watching over me.

From a distance.

In silence.

For fifty years.

In the center of the room sat a small wooden table.

On it was a sealed envelope with my name written in Walter's handwriting, and beside it, a thick stack of documents held together with a rubber band.

I was still on my knees when I heard a car door slam outside.

Walter's son, Richard, stepped through the garage door.

He looked at the walls.

He looked at me.

Then his expression hardened.

"You need to leave," he said.

"Whatever is in this room belongs to our family."

I looked down at the envelope in my hands.

"Your father addressed this to me."

Richard stepped closer.

"My father wasn't in his right mind when he married you.

We have a lawyer who agrees.

Anything in this garage, anything he left you — we're contesting every bit of it."

He reached out and tried to take the envelope from my hands.

That was when the attorney stepped forward and said four words that made Richard go completely still.
