Chapter 2: The Son Who Came Looking

My hands wouldn't stop shaking as I unzipped the backpack.
Inside was a thick envelope, a small leather journal, and a photograph.
I picked up the photograph first.
It showed a younger Thomas — maybe forty years old — standing in front of a large house, smiling wide.
Beside him stood a woman and a teenage boy.
I had never seen either of them before.
"Who are these people?" I asked.
The lawyer folded his hands slowly.
"His wife.
And his son."
The room felt like it tilted.
"Thomas was married?"
"Was," the lawyer said quietly.
"She passed away eleven years ago.
The son — his name is Daniel — he's been looking for Thomas for almost three years."
I stared at the photo.
The boy in it looked kind.
Happy.
Nothing like someone who would abandon a father.
"Why didn't Thomas ever tell me?"
The lawyer didn't answer right away.
He just nodded toward the envelope in my lap.
"Open it, Sarah."
I pulled out the first page.
It was a legal document.
My name was printed at the top.
Before I could read another line, the door opened behind me.
A man in his late thirties stepped into the room.
He looked at me.
Then at the backpack.
Then at the pull tab still on my finger.
His jaw tightened.
"So," he said, his voice low and controlled.
"You're the woman who married my father."
