Chapter 2: The Key and the Letter

My hands were shaking as I reached for the box.
Russell's daughter crossed her arms.
"Go ahead.
Open it.
Let's all see what the gold digger gets."
I lifted the lid.
Inside was a single envelope — and a key.
The lawyer cleared his throat.
"There is also a letter.
Russell asked me to read it aloud."
The daughter's smile faded slightly.
The lawyer unfolded the paper.
"To my wife — you came into my life when I had everything except someone who actually saw me.
You saw me.
For that, I have tried to give you not what others think you deserve, but what I know you do."
The room went completely silent.
Then Russell's son leaned forward.
"That's very touching.
But sentiment doesn't change the legal documents."
The lawyer looked at him calmly.
"No.
It doesn't."
He reached into his briefcase and placed a second envelope on the desk.
This one was sealed with a law firm stamp.
"Russell updated his estate arrangements four months before he passed."
The daughter stood up.
"That's impossible.
We were with him — he never —"
"He did it alone," the lawyer said.
"He was very specific about that."
She turned to me, and for the first time, the confidence in her face cracked.
"What did you do to him?"
I said nothing.
But my fingers tightened around that key.
