Chapter 2: What a Nine-Year-Old Carried to Her Father's Wedding

I grabbed my keys and drove to that venue with my hands shaking the whole way.
When I walked in, the room went quiet.
Everyone was staring at the front of the hall.
And there was Amelia — standing at the microphone, her small voice carrying across the entire room.
"Daddy, I have something to say."
Ryan's face had gone pale.
My sister — his new bride — was frozen at the altar, her bouquet still in her hands.
Amelia reached into the little purse she'd brought and pulled out a folded piece of paper.
"I found this in Daddy's old jacket.
I didn't understand it at first.

The room held its breath.
My cousin grabbed my arm.
"That's a letter," she whispered.
"And it's not from your sister."
Ryan took one step toward Amelia.
"Sweetheart, put that down—"
"It says," Amelia continued, her voice trembling but steady, "that there's another baby.
And it isn't Mommy's."
A woman in the third row stood up slowly.
Nobody recognized her.
Nobody except Ryan.
His face said everything.
