Chapter 2: The Name on the Phone

Part 2 ⬇️

Willie cried for a long time before he could speak again.

I held him, but my hands were shaking.

When he finally looked up, he whispered one name.

My whole body went cold.

It was Robert's sister.

Dana.

I sat there unable to move.

Dana had been at the hospital that night.

She'd hugged me the next morning, cried with me, told me how sorry she was.

I thought back to every moment since then.

The way she'd avoided my eyes at the funeral.

How quickly she'd left town the week after.

I stood up slowly and walked to Robert's study.

He was at his desk when I opened the door.

"Why was Dana at the hospital the night our daughter d*ed?"

He didn't answer right away.

That pause told me everything.

"She came to support us—"

"Willie saw you, Robert."

His face changed.

"He saw the envelope.

He saw her walk away with a bundle that was crying."

Robert stood up.

"He's eight years old.

He doesn't understand what he saw."

"Then explain it to me."

He said nothing.

My voice dropped to almost nothing.

"Where is our daughter, Robert?"

He looked at the floor.

And that's when I noticed his phone screen light up on the desk.

The name on it stopped my breath.

Dana.
