Chapter 2: Something Nobody Mentioned

I didn't say anything.
I just looked at him.
He pulled out the chair across from me and sat down.
He didn't touch the dish.
"There's a kid at work," he said.
"Danny.
He's nineteen.
His mum passed last month and he's been eating rubbish ever since.
Crisps, energy drinks, whatever's in the vending machine."
I kept my eyes on him.
"One of the lads mentioned it at the pub.
Said Danny hadn't had a proper meal in weeks.
So I rang my mum from the car park."
I felt something shift in my chest.
But I didn't let it show yet.
"She made the lasagna.
I picked it up on the way home.
I was going to drop it to him Sunday morning before he started his shift." He exhaled.
"I put it in our fridge because I didn't want it sitting in the van overnight."
"And the writing?" I said.
He closed his eyes for a second.
"Danny's mum used to write that on everything she sent him.
Every packed lunch, every container.
He told one of the lads about it.
My mum thought—" He stopped.
"She was trying to be kind.
I should have told you.
I know I should have told you."
I looked at the dish.
Then I looked at my husband.
And I wanted to believe every word of it.
But there was something he hadn't explained yet.
Something I'd noticed that morning and hadn't said out loud.
The dish had already been opened.
