Chapter 2: What Nora Left Behind
PART 2
Christopher stood in the doorway of Nora's room.
The bed was stripped.
The equipment was gone.
A single envelope sat on the nightstand with his name written on it in Nora's handwriting.
His hand shook as he opened it.
Inside was a letter — and a folded document from the hospital legal department.
He read the letter first.
*"Christopher.
If you're reading this, I'm already gone.
I want you to know that I recorded every phone call.
Every time Abigail begged Gwen.
Every time your office put her on hold.
I have the dates.
I have the timestamps.
I gave copies to my attorney three weeks ago."*
He stopped breathing.
He unfolded the hospital document.
It was a formal complaint — filed the day before Nora passed — naming Reynolds Enterprises for the deliberate delay of authorized emergency care.
At the bottom was a second signature he didn't recognize.
He called Gwen immediately.
"Did you know about this?"
Silence.
"Gwen."
"…She came to the office alone one afternoon," Gwen said quietly.
"I didn't think she was serious."
Christopher looked back at the letter.
The last line read:
*"Abby doesn't know any of this yet.
But she will.
And so will your grandfather."*
His phone lit up.
An Atlanta area code he didn't recognize.
He answered.
"Mr.
Reynolds," said a calm male voice.
"My name is Daniel Holt.
I'm Nora's attorney.
We need to talk about what gets filed on Monday."
