Chapter 2: What the Man in the Dark Suit Knew

Serena's mouth opened.

Nothing came out.

Gabriel didn't raise his voice.

That was the terrifying part.

He just stood completely still, eyes fixed on her, waiting.

"How long, Serena."

Not a question anymore.

She looked at me.

Then at the boys.

Then back at him.

"Gabriel, I was protecting you—"

"How.

Long."

Her voice dropped to almost nothing.

"Since before the divorce."

The air left my lungs.

Before the divorce.

She had known before he handed me those papers over breakfast.

Before I signed.

Before I drove away from that Westchester estate telling myself he had never really loved me.

She had known I was carrying his children.

And she had said nothing.

My son was still peeking around my dress, watching Gabriel with those gray-green eyes — his father's eyes.

Gabriel slowly stood up from his knee.

He turned to Serena with an expression I had never seen on him before.

Not anger.

Something colder.

"You let me divorce the mother of my sons."

"You were finally free of her—"

"You let me lose five years."

Serena reached for his arm again.

He stepped back.

Then one of my boys tugged my hand and whispered, "Mom, why is that lady crying?"

Before I could answer, a man in a dark suit appeared at Gabriel's shoulder and leaned close.

Whatever he said made Gabriel go completely still.

He looked at me.

Then at my sons.

Then back at the man.

"Say that again."
