Chapter 2: She Brought a Suitcase

Part 2 ⬇️

We sat in a corner booth at the diner down the street.

Maya ordered pancakes even though it was dinnertime.

I didn't say a word about it.

She was quiet for a while.

Then she looked up at me.

"Mommy, is Aunt Renee going to live with us now?"

I set down my coffee.

"Why would you ask that?"

"Because she brought a suitcase."

I hadn't seen a suitcase.

I hadn't looked.

"She and Daddy were talking about the guest room," Maya said.

"Before you got home.

I heard them from the stairs."

My chest went tight.

"Renee said the guest room needed to be cleared out." Maya picked at the edge of her napkin.

"She said some of your stuff was in there and it could be moved."

I kept my voice steady.

"When did she say that?"

"A few days ago.

I thought it was just talk."

A few days ago.

Damon had known for days.

I reached across the table and covered Maya's hand with mine.

When we got back, Damon was standing in the hallway alone.

Renee was nowhere in sight.

He looked at my hand — at the bare finger where my ring used to be — and something in his face shifted.

"We need to talk," he said.

"Yes," I said.

"We do."

Then my phone buzzed.

A number I didn't recognize.

I answered it.

The voice on the other end said four words that made Damon's expression collapse completely.
